What Does Google Business Profile Management Actually Involve?

Published on 13 September 2026 by Mark

For a lot of local businesses, the Google Business Profile is the first thing a customer actually sees, before the website, before a phone call, sometimes before they even know the business exists. And yet it's usually the most neglected part of a business's online presence. Someone claims it, fills in the basics, and never opens it again unless a review comes in that needs a reply.

It's Not Just a Listing

A Google Business Profile holds a lot more than a name and a phone number. Categories, service areas, opening hours, individual services or products, photos, posts, questions and answers, and reviews all live in the same place, and Google uses most of it when deciding who to show for a local search. A profile that's accurate and current is doing genuine work. One that's been left as it was on day one usually isn't, even if nothing on it looks obviously wrong.

Why It Gets Left Alone

It's rarely neglect through carelessness. Most business owners are busy doing the actual work, and logging into a separate dashboard to update opening hours for a bank holiday, or add a new service, or reply to a review, is easy to keep putting off. The profile doesn't break when it's ignored, it just slowly stops reflecting the business accurately, and nobody notices until a customer turns up when the business is shut, or asks why a service they offer isn't mentioned anywhere.

What Proper Management Looks Like

In practice, it's a handful of small things done regularly rather than one big task. Opening hours kept correct, including holidays and one-off closures. Services and products added or removed as the business actually changes, not left frozen from setup. Photos refreshed so the profile still looks like the business looks now. Reviews responded to, good and bad, promptly and properly rather than left sitting for weeks. None of it is difficult on its own, but it adds up to a job that's easy to let slip when it's not anyone's main responsibility.

Where It Fits With Everything Else

A well-managed profile doesn't replace the rest of what makes local SEO work, consistent business details, genuine reviews, a site that mentions where you actually operate, but it's usually the single highest-leverage part of it. If you've ever wondered why your website isn't showing up on Google despite posting updates on your profile now and then, an out-of-date or half-finished profile is very often part of the answer.

How I Handle This for Clients

This is now something I manage directly for clients as part of the ongoing work, alongside the website itself. That means logging in and keeping the profile accurate on their behalf: updating hours, adding services as the business grows, refreshing photos, and responding to reviews, so it isn't another login the client has to remember or another job competing for their time.

Quick Answers

What is Google Business Profile management?

Google Business Profile management means keeping a business's Google listing accurate and current on its behalf: opening hours (including holidays and one-off closures), services and products, photos, and replies to reviews. It's a handful of small jobs done regularly rather than one big task.

How often should I update my Google Business Profile?

Update it whenever something about the business changes, such as holiday hours, a new service or a closure, and reply to reviews promptly rather than leaving them for weeks. Refreshing photos now and then keeps the profile looking like the business does today, not how it looked on the day it was set up.

Does a Google Business Profile help with local SEO?

Yes. Google uses the categories, service areas, opening hours, services, photos and reviews on a profile when deciding who to show for a local search. For most local businesses it's the single highest-leverage part of local SEO, alongside consistent business details and a website that mentions where you operate.

Can someone else manage my Google Business Profile for me?

Yes. Google lets a profile owner add managers, so someone else can keep it updated without you sharing your own login. Austin Tech Solutions manages profiles for clients this way, alongside their website.
