What Does "Hands-Off" Website Management Actually Mean?
"Hands-off" is one of those phrases that gets used a lot in web design marketing, and it means something different depending on who you ask. For some agencies it means you get a login to a website builder and a support ticket queue. For others it means a monthly retainer and a project manager relaying messages between you and whoever actually builds things.
Here's what it actually means when I say it: you tell me what your business does and who it's for, and I handle everything else, from the first sketch to the server it runs on, indefinitely.
Before You See a Single Design
The process starts with research, not a template picker. I look into your industry, your competitors, and what your customers are actually searching for before any design work begins. I'm based in Yorkshire and generally prefer meeting in person for this stage, since the strategy and site architecture decided here shape everything that follows.
You Approve the Direction, You Don't Manage the Build
Once the strategy is set, I build a working prototype and write the content myself, rather than sending you a content questionnaire to fill in. You review it and give direction on anything you want changed. What you don't get is a string of technical decisions to make on your own, like which plugin to use or how the contact form should be wired up. That part isn't yours to manage.
The Technical Side Is Entirely Off Your Plate
I personally handle the full build: the code, the SEO fundamentals, and making sure it works properly on a phone as well as a desktop. If something needs fixing under the hood, it gets fixed without you ever needing to know it happened.
What Happens After Launch
This is usually where "hands-off" stops meaning much with other providers. For ATS clients, it's where the ongoing part starts. I manage deployment, hosting, and security from day one, and that continues afterward through a straightforward ongoing arrangement, not a one-off handover where you're suddenly on your own. If your site needs a content update, a security patch, or a technical change six months after launch, that's still my job, not yours.
What "Hands-Off" Doesn't Mean
It doesn't mean you have no say. You approve the creative direction at every stage, and I'll always come to you with questions specific to your business that only you can answer, like what makes your service different from the next company in the same industry. What it means is that everything technical, from the first line of code to the certificate that keeps your site secure, is entirely my responsibility, not yours.
If that's the kind of working relationship you're after, have a look at what's included across each service, or get in touch directly to talk through your project.
